DIY Shutterfly ABC Book

This is one of my favorite things I have ever made! I am obsessed with pictures to begin with and have many photo albums (yes I print pictures and am proud! lol) and I scrapbook. I have made photobooks before when Shutterfly had their deals for my wedding and such. So when I saw this idea I just had to make one! It's a hardcover book, great keepsake, and a fun way to teach your kids their ABC's. It can be made with pictures from any age range; the one I made is mostly months 6-8.

Now I must admit thinking of objects for each letter of the alphabet is easier said than done!So feel free to use my idea's, or on letters I got stuck on I would just google for ideas. Also, these books run about $30 for an 8x8. However, if you become a member of shutterfly when you create your book, they have sales all the time and will email you promotion and codes. For example, they have 40% off photobooks all the time, and about twice a year they will send you a code for a free book where you have to pay shipping.

And here is a picture of the actual book!

Disney Silhouettes

I have been prepping for my son's first birthday lately, which is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse themed. So a lot of my first blogs will probably be Mickey related for that reason. For this one I have made Disney silhouette plaques. They are pretty easy and fun to make. I am using them as party decor but will later be putting them in my kid's playroom!

1) What you will need: Printed silhouette character of choice, Wooden plaque, 2 acrylic paint choices (one for silhouette- I chose white, and one for the background- I chose yellow), Scissors, tape (a blue masking tape is what i would recommend), small paint brush, foam brush, and an xacto or box cutter.

2) Paint the plaque with the color you want your silhouette to be. Do a few coats so you can't see the wood pattern anymore, and then set out to dry. You need this part to be dry before moving on, or the tape will rip up the white paint later when removing the silhouette. Since its summer right now, I usually just set mine out in the sun for 4-5 hours during the day and it is good to go.

3) While your plaque is drying, cut out your character silhouette. Then cover it in the masking tape, overlapping each piece a little and making sure there it sticks out past the character.

                                    Front

                             Back (sticky side)

4 ) Cut the silhouette out, with just a little tape lining it in order to keep its shape. I usually cut a little access tape off first. It makes it easier to cut it out since the tape keeps sticking to the scissors.

5) After the plaque is dry, put the silhouette in desired position- sticky side down. Then use the scissors ,tracing the tape and pressing it down around the edges to make sure it's sticking well and no paint will squeeze through.

6) Paint your background color. Again, I would recommend a few coats of paint. Then I usually let it dry over night.

7) When completely dry, the silhouette is ready to be removed. My first attempt I tried to just pull off the taped character, but it pulled paint up in undesired spots. So now I first go over the whole outline with my box cutter. And Xacto knife would be ideal for this, but I was too lazy to find mine in my craft box, and my box cuter was right there... so there ya go :)

8) Use scissors, or Xacto/box cutter to lift a piece of the silhouette. Then slowly peel the character off.

9) I always have a couple spots where the paint still seeped in. So I use my little paint brush to go around the edges and clean any of those spots up. And wa-la! You have your new adorable piece!

*HELPFUL HINT* The plaques can run anywhere from $2.00-$9.99. To save use Michaels 40% off coupon. If you think you don't have one, but you have a smart phone- YOU DO! Go to Michaels.com on your phone. Then "Weekly add" to "coupons". There is a 40% off coupon always on there and you can use it once a day. I literally went back every day to buy these supplies and save since I have a Michaels just down the street from me.
